The Charpy & Izod Testing Procedure is used to evaluate plastic and composite test specimens as part of the Notched bending test. A wedge-shaped blade is attached to the lower end of a freely oscillating pendulum and strikes the test specimen at a specific velocity. The impact of the pendulum hammer damages or fractures the test specimen; the specific velocity of the blade is automatically and electronically controlled and measured. The load-bearing capacity and toughness of the test specimen are determined based on the measured deflection of the pendulum hammer and the blade. In accordance with recognized testing standards, various specific blades are used, and the pendulum hammer is electronically controlled accordingly. An optional partial protective device and full protective enclosure are available.
