Product description:
Nanotech industry products Precision density cup is a precision-engineered container for the professional determination of the specific gravity of liquid samples, including paints, inks, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foods and similar samples.
This precision-engineered Density cup is available in stainless steel and aluminum.
The specific density of a liquid product should remain constant from batch to batch. Specific density containers are used to specific weight per unit volume liquid samples at a certain temperature. To determine the quality of a coating, a calibrated density cup used to Density of the sample which is compared to specified density standards and correlated with the sample. If the measured density of the sample agrees with the specified density standards, the composition of the sample normally provides the expected quality of the tested product.
This calibrated density cups is precision engineered and made from high quality stainless steel or anodized aluminum and has a cylindrical shape with a stainless steel or aluminum lid. A small opening in the center of the lid allows excess sample liquid and air bubbles to escape to ensure the highest accuracy and highest precision. The serial number is printed on both the calibrated Density cup as well as on the calibrated lid to ensure that when using multiple Density cups always the calibrated Density cup to have a suitable lid on hand.
This professional and calibrated density cup is designed and manufactured in accordance with internationally recognized testing standards including:
- ASTM D333 (Standard Guide for Clear and Pigmented Paints)
- ASTM D891 - 18 (Standard Test Method for Apparent Specific Gravity of Liquid Industrial Chemicals)
- ASTM D1475 (Standard Test Method for Density of Liquid Coatings, Inks, and Related Products)
- ASTM D2805 (Standard Test Method for Hiding Power of Paints by Reflectometry)
- ISO 2811 (Paints and varnishes – Determination of density – Part 1: Pycnometer method)
- BS 3900 A19 (Paints and varnishes. Determination of density. Pycnometer method)
- DIN 53217 (Determination of density of paints, varnishes and similar coating materials; overview of test methods)
- NFT30-020

Precision Density Cups – Applications:
The density of a liquid is an important physical property that describes its behavior and interaction with other substances. It is defined as mass per unit volume and is given in SI units in kg/m³. Knowledge of density is important in various areas, for example in chemistry, pharmacy, the food industry and environmental technology.
Measuring principle of the density cup
A density cup, also called a pycnometer, is a simple and precise instrument for determining the density of liquids. The measuring principle is based on comparing the mass of a liquid with the mass of the same volume of distilled water.
method
Preparation: Clean and dry the density cup carefully. Distill water and let it cool to obtain the reference density.
Filling with water: Completely fill the density cup with distilled water up to the mark. Remove excess water with an absorbent cloth to ensure exact volume.
Weighing with water: Weigh the filled density cup on a precision balance. Record the weight (Mw) of the filled density cup with water.
Emptying and drying: Empty the density cup completely and dry it carefully.
Filling with liquid: Fill the density cup with the liquid to be tested up to the mark. Make sure that no air bubbles are trapped.
Weighing with liquid: Weigh the filled density cup with the liquid on the precision balance. Record the weight (Mf) of the filled density cup with liquid.
Calculating the density
The density (ρ) of the liquid is calculated using the following formula:
ρ = (Mf - Mt) / (Mw - Mt) * ρw
ρ: Density of the liquid in kg/m³
Mf: Weight of the filled density cup with liquid in kg
Mt: Weight of empty density cup in kg
Mw: Weight of the filled density cup with water in kg
ρw: Density of distilled water at the measuring temperature (approx. 1000 kg/m³ at 20°C)
